Passing over a bridge, I witnessed this flat-bottomed boat with two men fishing. Returning to the same place a year later, I saw another boat in the exact spot. I knew then that I had to paint that scene.

On the opposite side I watched the colors change minute by minute. As the shadows crept higher, trees saturated in color grew dark while their reflected colors vanished into the rippling waters.

As I observed the palms and tall pines catching the last rays of light, I was determined to return to the studio and re-create what I saw. While finishing the scene later, however, I felt something was missing. Finally I placed a full moon rising behind the trees, anchoring the painting, possibly adding a bit of mystery as well.

In the evening sky the rounded edge of a crescent moon always points directly to the spot on the horizon where the sun sets. Therefore, I carefully placed the most intense reds in the lower right portion of the sky and contrasted those hues with the dark colors of the palmettos.

I have spent many hours at the various gardens in Charleston, so when I was asked to do this garden painting, I looked to Magnolia for my subject matter. My clients wanted me to include a blue heron or egret as a focal point in the composition. I felt a heron would get lost among the darker colors, so I contrasted this white egret against the deep greens and reflected his image into the water.

The annual migration of purple martins to Bomb Island, Lake Murray every July and August provides an unforgettable visual experience. As dusk emerges, a few birds dot the horizon. By sunset their numbers have multiplied into thousands as they descend upon the island in a frenzy, claiming their sanctuary among the trees.

Along the banks of the Broad River in Columbia, I found this tree, water and rock-filled composition. Returning later in the day, I was drawn to the brilliant backlighting of the multicolored leaves that contrasted against the deep shadows of

On a sunny, cloud-filled day, I'm aware of the basic principals of atmospheric perspective. The clouds directly above me are round, large, and distinct. Farther away, they become smaller, flatter, and less defined, while toward the horizon they soften into a hazy mass of light color.

An amazing thing happened when the sun reappeared below the heavy cloud cover. The purple-gray bottom edge of clouds became rimmed in a fiery hue of red, and the entire waterscape suddenly filled with a golden light.
